More to see and do in Grantham

Belton House

Sitting elegantly in formal gardens with views across pleasure grounds and an ancient deer-park, Belton is often cited as being the perfect example of an English country-house estate. Although built on a modest scale, it has a fine collection of porcelain and silver, a world-renowned library and architectural finesse that reflects the continued wealth and cultured tastes of its former owners, the Brownlow family. In more recent times, Belton has become a popular destination for families in search of outdoor fun, with seasonal trails and the National Trust’s largest outdoor adventure playground.

Belvoir Castle

Belvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland and the family have lived there in an unbroken line for almost a thousand years. Its turrets and towers rise over the Vale of Belvoir like an illustration in a fairytale. Due to the Castle being home to the Rutland Family we are only open on selected days throughout the year (see our website for details). Belvoir has many rooms to view, with history interwoven into the very fabric of the building. Our Tea Room in the castle offers a selection of sandwiches, home-made cakes & scones. Wonderful themed gardens delight our visitors. We hold renowned annual festivals and events within the grounds and you can shop in delight at The Engine Yard retail centre, located opposite our car park. Belvoir Castle has something to delight all ages and a warm welcome awaits…

St John the Baptist Church

Explore the history of this Grade 1 church dating from the 11th Century and one of the oldest churches in Lincolnshire – and discover its link with the family of Isaac Newton. See the font in which Isaac was baptised in January 1642 and the sundial he carved with a penknife aged 9. Learn about plans to restore the Newton Family Chapel and install a Newton Heritage Learning Centre, focussed on science and faith in Sir Isaac Newton’s life and work.

Grantham Canal

The Grantham Canal towpath offers visitors a delightful 33 mile meander through the Vale of Belvoir. Opening in 1797, the canal’s prime purpose was transporting coal; fuelling the burgeoning industry and domestic needs of Grantham. Following closure in 1936, the canal is now under restoration. Between April and October, narrowboat cruises of 2, 3 or 4 hours, exclusive to your party, can be taken from Woolsthorpe by Belvoir. Tea & coffee is served throughout your cruise, all inclusive – why not bring a picnic hamper to enjoy as you glide through the pastoral landscape. Pre-booking required. More details on our website.

ChristChurch Grantham

ChristChurch is a very large, Italianate Grade II listed building, situated in the centre of Grantham. The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, as it was formerly known, was built in 1840. The excellent acoustics at ChristChurch, together with the original Foster and Andrew’s pipe organ is in demand by organ scholars as a practice and performance instrument. Many music events are held here, recently the sanctuary hosted a concert by the cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason (who played at the Royal wedding in 2018) with an audience of 500. The Chapel was also attended by Margaret Thatcher (nee Roberts) throughout her youth.
