Attractions | The Deepings
Founded as a Benedictine Priory in 1139, this fine large church has what Pevsner describes as an 'outstanding' seven bay nave arcade topped by an early English triforium extending to a long chancel with monastic sedilia and a double piscina. There is a magnifiecnet Norman tub font, evidence of guild chapels, several monuments and stained glass by Ward and Hughes. The church has links with Lady Margaret Beaufort, Tudor musician Robert Fairfax and Adam Buddle the 17th century botanist after whom the plant buddleia is named. Near the church is a 15th century Market Cross and a bridge dated 1651.
