SUMMARY:Love's Labour's Lost by William Shakespeare (Stamford Shoestring Theatre)
DESCRIPTION:Love’s Labour’s Lost is one of Shakespeare’s most beguiling comedies. The King of Navarre and three companions swear an oath to study and to create ‘a little academe’ which will be the ‘wonder of the world’. They must go into retreat for three years and give up worldly pleasures – including women. \nWhen a Princess arrives with her ladies-in-waiting\, the whole scheme is placed in jeopardy. Human nature is soon at war with high-minded ideals. \nHailed by Guardian drama critic Michael Billington as one of the 101 greatest plays ever written\, Love’s Labour’s Lost shows the full flower of Shakespeare’s genius for the first time. \nStamford Shoestring Theatre is the resident amateur at the Arts Centre

SUMMARY:Made in England: Powell & Pressburger (12A)
DESCRIPTION:Dir: David Hinton | UK | 2024 | 133 mins Documentary \nThe story of Martin Scorsese’s lifelong love affair with the films of Powell and Pressburger. \nFirst encountering Powell and Pressburger films as a child in front of the family TV\, Scorsese remembers that when their logo came on screen\, “you knew you were in for fantasy\, wonder\, magic – real film magic.” \nIn BAFTA-winner David Hinton’s wonderful\, captivating doc\, a must for cineastes\, Scorsese explains his lasting love of films like The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp\, Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes. Drawing on archive material\, he explores the collaboration between the English Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger – two romantics and idealists\, who crafted subversive\, richly distinctive films that counter-intuitively thrived in the face of adversity during WWII – and their continuing influence on his own directorial style. \n“A unique homage to two legends” Empire \n“Glorious” Total Film

SUMMARY:LYR
DESCRIPTION:LYR are Poet Laureate Simon Armitage\, singer-songwriter Richard Walters\, and multi-instrumentalist/producer Patrick James Pearson. Formed in 2018\, LYR are now a firmly established part of the contemporary music scene\, with regular radio airplay across the networks\, a critically acclaimed debut album\, Call In The Crash Team\, and over two million streams to their name. They have appeared at many major festivals over the past three years including Green Man and Blu Dot and completed UK tours and sell-out events at venues such as the Howard Assembly Rooms in Leeds. \nHaving released their debut album through Decca label Mercury KX\, as well as releasing music through the traditional channels the LYR ethos is very much about pursuing other creative ventures and bespoke projects. In 2020 they released the song Lockdown featuring actress Florence Pugh\, to raise money for the charity Refuge\, in support of abused women. Commissioned by Durham Brass Festival to compose work around the theme of County Durham’s struggling pit villages\, in July of this year LYR delivered a passionate and culturally significant performance in Durham Cathedral\, backed by Easington Colliery Band. The making of the work was recorded in the documentary Firm As A Rock We Stand and released as an EP under the same title. In spring of this year LYR devised and produced a full-scale promenade musical and dramatic performance of the ancient poem Gilgamesh with students at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. LYR specialise in collaborations with filmmakers\, choirs\, orchestras\, and many different kinds of artists with a view to making a distinctive brand of art\, but one that always has memorable songs\, melodies and words as its foundation stones. \nPhoto credit – Katie Silvester \nImportant Information \nVenue: Stamford Arts Centre\, Ballroom \nTickets: £20 standard
