SUMMARY:Military Lives: Grimsthorpe and it’s Warrior Heroes
DESCRIPTION:“Military Lives: Grimsthorpe and it’s Warrior Heroes” \nOur Summer Exhibition this year looks at military lives associated with Grimsthorpe Castle. This overarching theme is presented through three distinct narrivates. \nThe Noble Soldier \nIn the early 17th century\, Grimsthorpe was home to Robert Bertie\, 1st Earl of Lindsey and 13th Lord Willoughby de Eresby. Born in the Elizabethan golden age of Chivalry\, Robert was defined by her career as an elite military commander at a period of intense warfare in Europe and the stirrings of civil war in England. \nWe explore Robert’s life through a series of objects and images. Highlights include an exceptionally rare silk doublet and trunkhose\, Elizabethan armour\, early military handbooks\, and a very personal letter from Charles I to Robert’s son\, Montagu. \nArnhem 80: Lest We Forget \nTo commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem\, we look at the lives of soldiers of 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment\, whose headquarters were at Grimsthorpe Castle in 1942. Grimsthorpe and Bourne became the centre of a major airborne assault on mainland Europe in the darkest days of the Second World War. \nThrough a small memorial exhibition in the Chapel\, we pay our respects to the soldiers who briefly called Grimsthorpe home. Visitors can find out more about two of the men based here\, and see some of the surprising items we have found hidden behind the walls. \nThe Household Cavalry Regiment \nGrimsthorpe has a long association with the Household Cavalry Regiment\, which has traditionally acted as the monarch’s personal bodyguard. Twelve contemporary photographic portraits of members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment by the renowned artist\, Ripley\, will be displayed in the Vanbrugh Hall. \nThese portraits have recently been displayed at Blenheim Palace\, Apsley House\, Floors Castle and various other exceptional locations around Britain. A set of these images was presented to King Charles III by the Regiment in 2023 to mark His Majesty’s coronation. \nIncluded in your Castle\, Park & Gardens ticket\, which you can book online in advance or on arrival at the Ticket Hut.

The flowers create a beautiful display of pinks\, blues\, reds\, bi colours\, white and cream flowers. In the autumn the seeds are harvested and packed into keepsake tins for visitors to buy all year round. \nOpening Information…\nEaston Walled Gardens is open Wednesdays to Sundays\, 11am-4pm and Sweet Pea Season begins on 26th June. DESCRIPTION:Led by experienced ride leaders\, these rides are a great way to explore new places and to meet new people who enjoy cycling. Book a series of dates in July and August on the website. Cycle from Wyndham Park\, through Queen Elizabeth Park\, Londonthorpe Woods and on to Belton Estate. \nQualified British Cycling Ride Leaders will meet you in Wyndham Park and guide you at a safe and leisurely pace through Queen Elizabeth Park\, through Sunningdale and onto the new cycle/footpath up to Londonthorpe Woods. After a short break to introduce this beautiful woodland amenity\, you will make your way along 5 Gates Lane and on to the Belton Estate. \nHere you will stop for refreshments and be treated to a short talk about the estate. Once rested\, you will continue through the parkland and retrace your path back to Wyndham Park. \nYour leaders are fully trained and qualified through British Cycling\, and above all friendly. They will take all reasonable steps to ensure your\, and the public’s\, safety especially on road sections and we never leave anyone behind. \nSome of the route is on slightly bumpy gravel so thin road tyres are not ideal. \nPlease arrive on time to allow time for introductions and bike safety checks. \nVisit the Let’s Ride page to book your slot and search ‘Grantham’ to see the Reconnecting Grantham rides pop up.

SUMMARY:The Deepings Raft Race
DESCRIPTION:The Deepings Raft Race\, the highlight of summer in the Deepings\, is set to make waves once again on Sunday 4 August. The event promises a day of fun\, excitement\, and friendly competition\, drawing participants and spectators from near and far. \nThe annual charity event taking place every August in the Deepings on the River Welland is a fun day for everyone on and around the river. Over 40 homemade decorated rafts and their crews race up the river from the Bell Bridge in Deeping St James\, finishing at the Boundary Green\, with spectators cheering (and splashing!) them on from the river banks. \nThe raft race has been a beloved tradition in the Deepings since the 1960s\, raising money for local causes. This year the event will support three great causes: Little Miracles Children’s Charity\, Deeping Leisure Centre Community Project and the Deepings Community Library. Your participation in the Deepings Raft Race helps make a difference in the community around the Deepings. \n  \nRaft Race Day Programme\nThe start of the raft race is at the Bell Bridge in Deeping St James. SUMMARY:The Sealed Knot re-enactment society at Grimsthorpe Castle
DESCRIPTION:For one weekend Grimsthorpe Castle welcomes The Sealed Knot\, lead by Colonel John Pickering’s Regiment\, as they recreate 17th century life during the English Civil War and invite you to a unique event that will show life in the period.\nThe Sealed Knot is the oldest re-enactment society in the UK and brings history to life by staging events which offer a chance to experience at first hand the horrors of a nation at war with itself\, as well as providing a glimpse of everyday life in those days. \nMeet King Charles I and his family as they visit Grimsthorpe and set up their royal household.  See the soldiers that guard them but be aware that the kings safety is not to be taken for granted as the forces of Parliament and Oliver Cromwell are not far away and conflict is guaranteed as the two armies clash in the grounds of Grimsthorpe. \nWatch as the armies battle it out as Grimsthorpe is besieged by the Parliamentarians with cannon\, musket and cavalry – Will the King survive? \nIn the surrounding camps\, chat with the re-enactors demonstrating the skills\, crafts and roles of the everyday people from the estate as well as the families of the Royalist and Parliamentarian troops following the armies.  Try the weapons and clothing and see if you have what it takes to become a solider and fight for the King or for Parliament. \nAre you ready to see Grimsthorpe at war? Get up close and personal with your ancestors and dive into 17th Century life! \n  \nIncluded with a Park and Gardens ticket.
