Attractions | The Deepings
Tucked away between Stamford and Market Deeping lies the village of Helpston, the home of the renowned poet John Clare (1793-1864). John Clare lived in the village from 1793 until 1832. The John Clare Trust purchased the cottage in 2005. The cottage has been restored, using traditional building methods, to create a centre where people can learn about John Clare, his works and how rural people lived in the early 19th century. The gardens have been planted with varieties which would have been seen in Clare's time. The centre also includes a shop selling Clare related books, cards and craftwork created by local artists. There is also a cafe where you can enjoy homemade soup, scones and cakes.

More to see and do in The Deepings

The Bluebell Inn

Come to The Bluebell Inn for a night or two away and discover the beautiful local countryside. Our newly completed converted buildings attached to the pub create four en-suite rooms with their own history. All are ground floor with separate access from the pub. The rooms combine pared down, country chic style with honest creature comforts. What’s more, each room has beautiful soft furnishings, a flat screen TV, Tassimo coffee machine, tea making facilities, various books and games, and so much more. We’re committed to helping you unwind and want you to go home feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Thorney Heritage Museum

Our independent volunteer-run museum shows the history of our village and parish. A former island in the Fen, it became the site of a medieval abbey before being a centre for draining the Fens and rebuilding as a Victorian ‘model village’. Come on our general opening times in the summer, or phone in advance to ask us to open by appointment. Village tours available too.

The Bluebell Inn

A real village pub with rooms, privately owned, where you’ll find a great range of good cask beers, affordable wine, a huge shelf of gins, where everyone is looked after by our friendly professional team. Food is freshly prepared with quality seasonal, well sourced ingredients prepared for great flavour. Ideal for a light lunch or dinner (and not forgetting that all important Sunday roast!) with family and friends. Most of all we like to think we run an informal place for people like us who like to meet, eat, drink and talk in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Deepings Community Library

A Community Library and Information Centre based in an historic Georgian building in the heart of the Deepings. Mainly run by volunteers, it is a sociable, busy hub of activities for young and old. Local information displays and posters provide information on what to see and do in the area. Open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-3pm, closed on Sunday.

Thorney Abbey

Thorney Abbey is a vibrant parish church which welcomes visitors and which is part of a 12th century Benedictine abbey, making an unusually tall and calm interior. To this are added an early Victorian east end, a historic organ, interesting stained glass and a Millennium Tapestry, among other points of interest. From around 1651, a large group of French and Flemish migrants lived here, some of them Huguenots, and worshiped in the Abbey. We have a large text guide available in the church, and a tactile and Braille guide. Printed guides are available to buy.
