The parish church of St Wulfram is a noble building, one of the largest medieval churches in the country, seating around 900 people. Simon Jenkins in his book England’s Thousand Best Churches gave it a five-star rating.
The church is dedicated to St Wulfram, a 7th century missionary who was canonised after numerous miracles had been attributed to him.
The spacious interior has a broad nave and aisles. Inside and outside is a gallery of medieval carved stone heads. There is even a hippopotamus head to look out for!
Visit the ancient Chained Library (the first public library in the country) and go down to the Crypt Chapel. The windows contain wonderful Victorian and modern glass.
The church itself is usually open: Monday to Saturday from 9.00am - 6.00pm and Sunday 8.00am - 8.00pm.
The Coffee Shop is open Easter to September: Wednesday to Saturday 10.00am to 1.00pm. October to Easter: Wednesday and Saturday 10.00am to 1.00pm.
You are most welcome at St Wulfram's!
