Loomes Clock & Watchmakers

Proper British watchmakers occupy the old gaoler’s house next to the town bridge in Stamford. Loomes are an old established family firm who not only restore but also make fine timepieces. Our qualified and experienced staff can restore almost any kind of antique domestic clock, from an early long-case to a modern quarter-chiming wall clock. For larger items, we are able to collect and deliver and the clock is guaranteed ‘in the home’. Loomes watches are famous around the world. Loomes are currently the only British firm who can supply an entirely British made mechanical wristwatch. From our heritage workshops, we produce only a hundred watches a year. Each is hand-made by skilled staff, using components designed and manufactured in Stamford. Loomes watches are available in stainless steel or 18ct solid gold cases.

The Hospital or almshouse was founded by William Browne, a rich wool merchant of Stamford, and built in 1475. The Hospital or Bedehouse – a name by which it was also known – was established as a home and a house of prayer for 10 poor men and 2 poor women, with a Warden and a Confrater, both of whom were to be priests. The main rooms that can be visited are the Common Room, the Chapel, the Staircase, the Audit Room and the Confraters’ Room which contain original artefacts. The chapel retains important 15th century stained glass of national significance.
