Our Mothers (15)
Dir: César Díaz | Belgium, Guatemala | 2024 | 77 mins | Subtitled
Cast | Emma Dib, Armando Espitia, Aurelia Caal, Julio Serrano Echeverria
Winner of Cannes Film Festival’s prestigious Camera d’Or, Our Mothers is the gripping, powerfully emotional fiction feature debut from César Diaz.
Decades after the brutal Guatemalan Civil War, a young forensic anthropologist works tirelessly to find the remains of the missing. When an elderly woman’s witness statement gives Ernesto (Armando Espitia) a clue about the fate of his long-lost father, he investigates against the strenuous wishes of his mother Cristina (Emma Dib) and uncovers a terrible and shocking truth.
Drawn from his own history, Diaz’s multi award-winning film is a beautifully rendered study of Guatemala’s troubled past, with a rare focus on the US-backed military’s campaign against the country’s indigenous population.
