Rosalie (15)Dir: Stéphanie Di Giusto | France, Belgium | 2023 | 115 mins | Subtitled
Cast | Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Benoît Magimel, Benjamin Biolay, Guillaume Gouix
Based on a true story, Stephanie Di Giusto’s (The Dancer) bold and sensuous drama champions a woman who challenges society’s restrictive beauty standards.
1870s, Northern France: Rosalie (Nadia Tereszkiewicz) has a secret – her face and body are covered in hair. She’s concealed her hirsutism all her life, shaving to ensure she’s accepted in polite society. But her perspective changes when the conservative Abel (Benoît Magimel), unaware of her secret, marries her for her dowry. Could he love the real her? If not, why not? And what might happen if she went public?
With a winning central performance from Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Rosalie is an optimistic and open-hearted story about the power of self-acceptance, beautifully shot in rural France and featuring an airy, emotive soundtrack by composer Hania Rani.
