There is a reason why Wyndham Park has held green flag status for twelve years: it is an incredible space to spend time with family and friends. A café, ice cream parlour, restrooms, children’s playgrounds, tennis courts, and a model boating lake are just some of the park’s facilities and with plenty more to do and explore, you could happily spend all day there.
Wyndham Park, as it is today, was built after the First World War, as a memorial to the men of Grantham who served, and the men of the Machine Gun Corps who were trained nearby. Look out for the information boards in the park which tell more of its history. The park was restored in 2017 thanks to a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and more recently the ‘Hero’s Orchard’ was created at the park to commemorate the district’s links to D-Day.
Wyndham Park is one of our favourite places in Grantham and its not hard to see why! Pop into the visitor centre the next time you visit to find out about future events at the park and volunteering opportunities.
We must not forget about the two other South Kesteven District Council parks in Grantham that also hold green flag status.
Just a short walk from Wyndham Park, Queen Elizabeth Park has been a green flag park for three years. Bordered by the River Witham as it wends it way out of Grantham, Queen Elizabeth Park is a haven for wildlife. It features areas of woodland, wildflower meadows and, most recently, a wetland area has been created to further increase the biodiversity of Grantham’s country park. It is a great spot for taking the kids on a mini-beast hunt before they have a go on the zip wire in the play area; and the perfect location to relax away from the town centre.
Dysart Park has held Green Flag status for two years. The park has large areas of open space, perfect for a kick about, picnic areas and toilet facilities, as well as a children’s play areas, paddling pool and tennis courts, and a historic bandstand. Wildflower areas surround the park’s own natural spring. Tucked away in the south of the town Dysart Park is Grantham’s hidden green gem, well worth a visit.
All three are linked by the river-side walk (Sustrans National Cycle route 15), an idyllic, traffic free way to explore the town’s parks. The recently completed Witham Blue/Green project has improved the biodiversity of the river, so keep your eyes peeled as you pass by and you might spot the bright blue flash of one of the river’s resident Kingfishers, or even one of the elusive otters!
Dogs are welcome in all of the parks, but is should be noted that children’s play areas are dog- free zones.
Grantham is blessed with these amazing, beautiful green spaces, and we must make the most of them, so the next time you want to get out and about in the fresh air, we recommend a stroll along the river to make the most of what our award-winning parks have to offer.
